Our Name - Bethel United Reformed Church

BETHEL means "House of God". The Bible tells us the amazing truth that when God saves people, He joins them to the Church of Jesus Christ and makes them into "living stones, being built into a spiritual house" (I Peter 1:5). People are "built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit" (Ephesians 2:22). This speaks about our fellowship with God. He comes close to us, speaks to us in his Word and we may speak to Him in prayer. We become His children and He calls himself our Father. This speaks about God's ongoing work to make us holy or set apart for special service. No longer do we serve ourselves, but we serve the Lord. One day, Jesus will return to earth.(Revelation 1:7) Then we will live with God the Father and each other forever, free of the guilt and power of sin. (Revelation 21 & 22)

UNITED identifies us with a federation or denomination called the United Reformed Churches of North America (URC). There are more than 98 congregations in the URC and the number continues to grow. There are seven congregations in Alberta. It is our desire to remain true to the teachings of the Bible and to live and work together so the world can see by our unity that God sent Jesus Christ. (John 17:23).

REFORMED means that the Bible alone is God's infallible rule for both faith and life (II Timothy 3:16,17) and that we are not saved by any merit or work of our own but only by the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ. (Ephesians 2:8-10). We follow the teachings of the Bible as they have been summarized by the protestant Reformers of the 16th Century such as Martin Luther, John Calvin and John Knox. Their contributions in summarizing Biblical teachings are contained in the Reformed Confessions.

We are a CHURCH. The word Church literally means "belonging to the Lord". We belong to Jesus Christ because he paid for our sins with his blood. (Acts 20:28) Because we belong to Christ, he is at work in us to set us free from the power of sin .(Galatians 5:16-27) In this way, we do what we were all created to do - love God and our neighbour. He calls everybody - regardless of race, colour or economic status - all who will listen, all who will believe, to come and be His people and receive the free gifts of the forgiveness of sins and eternal life. (Matthew 11:28)
